Luxembourg Prime Minister Calls Putin, Expresses Concerns for Mariupol

Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, Bettel said.

“I just spoke to Vladimir Putin again. Since our last exchange, the situation on the ground has worsened, especially in the city of Mariupol. The images that come to us are intolerable. The objective must continue to be de-escalation, the adoption of the ceasefire and the advancement of negotiation processes.” Bettel said via Twitter.

The besieged city of Mariupol was the scene of heavy attacks by Russian forces, including an attack on a maternity and children’s hospital and the bombing of a theater used as a shelter. It continues to face desperate conditions, and some 2,500 civilians have died there, Ukrainian officials estimate.

Conditions in Mariupol are “unbearable” and “simply hellish”, they told CNN residents who fled the besieged city in southeastern Ukraine, when shocking drone footage and satellite photos emerged showing the utter devastation wrought by Russian bombing.

The Mariupol city council said on Tuesday that about 2,000 private cars had managed to leave the city, and another 2,000 vehicles were parked on Mariupol’s main route.
