Luxury travelers worry about Covid and prefer domestic destinations, says survey

despite the flexibility of travel restrictions because of the pandemic, Concern about Covid-19 is still the biggest factor when luxury travelers decide on a new destination.

Intensified cleaning, level of vaccination, access to medical support and free and fast PCR tests are the most sought after items among individuals in this niche.

This is what a survey conducted by Latin Exclusive, an international company for vacation rentals and the sale of luxury properties, points out, carried out between December 2021 and March 2022. It was observed that 64% of respondents consider the restrictions of the pandemic when deciding on a new destinationlike this 60% of them agree that intensified cleaning seriously influences their choice of vacation destinations.

To understand preferences and luxury tourism trends For this year, the agency consulted 128 select consumers in this market, including CEOs, directors, vice presidents, partners and owners of Brazilian companies with minimum revenue between R$ 100 million and R$ 1 billion – or more -, which vary from 20 to 55 years.

The results also reveal that the level of vaccination at the destination and 24-hour access to on-site medical support are concerns of 47% of respondents. Free and quick PCR tests also count, being highlighted by 45% of respondents.

Preference for domestic travel

The survey also points to a trend in the sector: the domestic tourism. Even with borders around the world open, interviewed travelers have preferred travel within Brazil.

Approximately 40% of them are planning trips close to home and spending money on internal travel.

Another trend that was confirmed during the pandemic and that continues to encourage travelers is the proximity to nature: about 59% of respondents are interested in the search for tranquility and calm. They, however, do not want to miss out on getting to know the culture (56%) and experiencing the local cuisine (70%) of the destinations.

“Today, the destinations most sought after by our customers are still the Northeast – especially the Bahia – and Rio de Janeiro, with the most secluded houses and away from large centers being the most sought after. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have seen a strong movement in the search for places closer to nature, with tranquility, comfort and luxury”, says Arnaud Bughon, CEO of Latin Exclusive.

According to the executive, this will be “a trend that we will still see throughout the first half of 2022, as we readapt around social life”, he adds.

More private experiences

The survey data also reveal that consumers in the luxury travel market choose more exclusive options in staysas well as in leisure activities – where there may be a certain social distancing.

As a counterpoint, only 8% of respondents plan to take tours in large groups, for example. Among the preferences in the stay, the data show that:

  • 45% of respondents prefer family activities
  • 41% prefer private tours to specific places of interest
  • 39% are interested in private pools
