Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu blamed Greece for not agreeing to discuss with Turkey and for running a smear campaign against his country, citing the need to take “confidence-building steps”.
In particular, as reported by SKAI, M. Cavusoglu stated that neither the Greek Minister of Defense “nor other relevant parties” have yet visited Turkey for years, adding that the exploratory contacts “were supposed to take place for some time” and that “Turkey shows willingness but not Greece”.
“Besides the lobbying and the campaign launched by Greece against Turkey, we had some quick meetings… Our defense minister had a greeting with the Greek defense minister at the NATO meeting. I saw Dendias passing through Madrid, we said a hi. Other than that, there was no meeting,” he pointed out.
Continuing, the Turkish Foreign Minister said that “while Turkey shows a will to solve all problems comprehensively, Greece is playing with time… It is clear that Greece is arming the islands. We brought the matter to the UN and international forums. We cannot to tolerate these violations of the Treaty of Lausanne”.
At the same time, he argued that “the EU would be a ‘global player’ if it accepted Turkey’s accession to the bloc, if we had taken steps together”.
Finally, Mr. Cavusoglu pointed out that the joint mechanism signed with a relevant memorandum between Turkey, Sweden and Finland “to address Ankara’s concerns” will come into force on August 26.
