Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said ahead of an informal meeting of EU heads of state and government in Versailles that “the answer to this drama can only be European.”
“I had a long meeting with the President (of France, Emanuel) Macron. We talked about the war and its consequences for Europe and Italy. France and Italy are in line with the rest of the EU, both in terms of “It concerns the response to the sanctions, as well as the necessary support that our countries will need, due to these sanctions,” the Italian prime minister added.
“The EU will continue to urge Putin to stop bombing, especially against civilians,” he said, adding that “the response to this drama can only be European.” The European economy continues to grow but at a slower pace, especially in the energy, food, steel, paper and ceramics sectors.
“We have to respond to all this by supporting businesses and the purchasing power of households, with the same conviction and speed with which we supported the response in Russia,” Draghi said.
Finally, the Italian Prime Minister, answering a question about the possibility of supporting businesses and European citizens, “with a single European debt”, stressed that “the positions of Italy and France are completely identical on this issue as well”.
