“For PASOK, for the democratic faction that has fallen victim to similar practices, in the period 1989-1993, the issue does not close here. Even if some hope so. On the contrary, it is just opening,” warned the head of PASOK-KINAL’s KO Michalis Katrinis, who intervened in the debate in the Plenary, regarding the indictment of Nikos Androulakis for the attempt to monitor his mobile phone.
Mr. Katrinis said that in addition to the indictment filed by the president of PASOK, the vice-president of the European Commission, the responsible commissioner, the president of the European Parliament and the members of the European Parliament’s inquiry committee were informed about the investigation into the use of Pegasus software and related spyware monitoring software.
“The complaint of the president of PASOK-KINAL is not only related to ensuring the privacy of communications, but is a matter of democracy and its smooth functioning,” said Michalis Katrinis and added that “the issue is extremely serious, because some seem to they want to take us back to the era of bedbugs, tracking the mobile phone of the leader of the third-rate parliamentary party”.
Possibly, this is not the only case of surveillance, said Mr. Katrinis, pointing out that there has also been a complaint by a journalist, for another case, and in fact a question was submitted by the competent head of PASOK Giorgos Kamines, without an answer.
“The complaint of the president of PASOK is fully documented. It resulted from an audit at the European Parliament, in accordance with the relevant security protocol and is accompanied by a report from the services of the European Parliament, and the head of the Eurogroup of Democrats and Socialists has already expressed her undivided support for the president of PASOK Nikos Androulakis,” said Mr. Katrinis and informed the national delegation that “the president of PASOK had received a text message on September 21, 2021, which invited him to click on a specific link, which, according to the Citizens report lab, of the University of Toronto, is used as a decoy to install the Predator surveillance software on the mobile target. The specific link was a spoof website and the message was misleading to induce the president of PASOK to click on the specific link.”
It is a given that it is not excluded that there is monitoring with other or similar systems which do not leave similar traces, said the head of PASOK’s KO who underlined that “it is a matter of democracy for the country, the in-depth investigation of this very serious case and the answers to be given to very specific questions”.
The head of K.O. of PASOK insisted that there should be answers to specific questions from the government and specifically from the Maximos Palace, which from July 2019 placed the National Intelligence Service under the supervision of the prime minister. “Has the EPA bought this particular tracking software? Because according to findings published in December by researchers at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab, the Threat Analysis Group found that government agencies that bought the Predator software that targets Android mobile phone users were in Egypt, Armenia, Greece, Madagascar, Cote d’Ivoire, Serbia, Spain and Indonesia. Is this true? Has EYP bought this particular software in the last three years? Will anyone from the government respond?”, he stressed. Michalis Katrinis.
“We will not return to the era of bedbugs. Everyone should realize this. This particular issue is an issue that concerns the entire political system. The government must provide answers, the judiciary must proceed with the investigation and the Parliament must undertake and her responsibilities in terms of ensuring the confidentiality of communications. Because at some point the parliamentary procedures must also be activated. For PASOK, it is a question of democracy, a question of applying the rules of the Rule of Law. And we will not make discounts”, he pointed out closing his speech the head of the Parliamentary Group of PASOK-KINAL.
