M. Katrinis: The distance between the Right and social policy is great

“The class and ideological identity of the ND is evident in the government. It is clear with whom and for whom it governs. For the few. We will tell you even if you don’t like it,” said Michalis Katrinis, head of the K.O. PASOK-KINAL, in his speech in Parliament during the pre-day debate, at the level of party leaders, on social policy.

The head of PASOK-KINAL’s K.O strongly criticized the prime minister and the official opposition leader, speaking of a show of polarization with personal attacks. “We will not follow you,” he said.

Regarding the election rhetoric that prevails in the public political discourse, Michalis Katrinis noted that “the country has already entered, under the government’s responsibility, a prolonged pre-election period, stressing that “the sooner the elections are held, the better. Why the country needs a new change, a new beginning with PASOK as the protagonist.”

Mr. Katrinis underlined that “PASOK was and is with the underprivileged” and added that for the right-wing faction, social policy and the welfare state are a burden to development for it and the government only gives tips.

“The great distance that separates the conservative faction from social politics has been known for decades. But for all of us, in PASOK, social politics is a structural element of our politics and ideology.

For us in PASOK, the welfare state is a key parameter of social cohesion and economic development, with a horizontal dimension in all our policies”, stressed the head of the PASOK Parliamentary Group.

Mr. Katrinis also analyzed the program proposals of his party, which include:

-Reduction of taxes on fuel and basic food items.

– Imposing a ceiling on the retail price of energy.

– Immediate increase of the minimum wage to 751 euros.

-Incentives for new hires in private companies, by linking recruitment and tax exemptions.

– Utilization of the resources of the Recovery Fund with the aim of creating many and well-paid jobs.

-Granting a new EKAS to relieve the 350,000 low pensioners and exempting all pensioners from the Solidarity Contribution.

-The construction with resources of the Recovery Fund, a total of 35,000 new houses, which will be available to new couples and the economically weaker, against a low rent.

Michalis Katrinis spoke about the new development model for the country with a focus on strengthening domestic production, small and medium enterprises, modern agricultural production, the defense industry, energy networks.

As he said, “the goal must be the creation of many and well-paid jobs, the reduction of social inequalities, but also inequalities in the education and training system, so that there are equal opportunities for all.

“These goals for PASOK are the goals of the government program, they are the goals of tomorrow’s content that the governance of the country should have,” he added.

The head of PASOK’s K.O emphasized that “these goals in themselves set the dividing line between progress and maintenance, between the ideas of modern social democracy and populism.”
