The new electricity transmission projects and the rapid introduction of storage technologies in the energy system, highlighted as basic conditions of the green transition the President and CEO of IPTO Mr. Manos Manousakis, during his current placement in the 10th Athens Energy Dialogues. Mr. Manousakis referred to the significant acceleration of IPTO investments for new transmission networks and stressed that energy storage is what will allow the effective utilization of RES.
If we want a fast transition to RES we need networks
Mr. Manousakis stated that the “explosion” of RES in recent years has created the need for significant expansion of the network. This is because the points of production of electricity have multiplied compared to the previous situation, when the thermal units were much less and required dense networks only in specific areas. IPTO, stressed Mr. Manousakis, from 2017 until today has increased fivefold its investments for the construction of new electricity transmission infrastructure, significantly enlarging the network for the connection of new RES.
However, he pointed out the delays that are observed, typically saying that we should still “look in the mirror” as a country, as phenomena such as the obstruction of the completion of the Western Corridor in the Peloponnese or the demonization of the transmission and distribution networks for any evil that happens in the country with incredible ease and without proof, do not contribute in this direction.
Utilization of storage for even faster energy transition
Mr. Manousakis also referred to the issue of storage, emphasizing that we must accelerate the introduction of storage in the energy system because this will mean a real acceleration of RES, for which investment interest remains huge.
Today, he said, the power of RES in operation amounts to 9 GW, the occupied space for new projects to 10 GW while requests have been submitted for another 20 GW. Storage is especially important in order to ensure adequacy and achieve energy autonomy through clean energy. There is a great investment mood for storage technologies that are maturing rapidly, while in our country the relevant institutional framework is expected to be ready soon that will allow us to use them.
Readiness for energy efficiency in view of summer
Finally, the head of IPTO referred to the preparations made by the manager in view of the summer. All the competent bodies, including the Administrator, are on standby and we have prepared the necessary plans, in order to ensure the adequacy of all possible scenarios during the summer, said Mr. Manousakis. It is also positive, he added, that in the immediate future a new unit will be put into operation which will strengthen the System in conditions of particularly high demand during the summer season. We should be aware of electricity consumption and gradually develop a culture of energy saving in our country, through our daily habits, concluded the head of IPTO.
