M. Schoinas in Cyprus for the refugee

The Vice-President of the European Commission visited the Green Line and co-signed a memorandum of cooperation with the EU on better refugee management.

Strengthening funding to Cyprus and mobilizing all available European Commission units and services to assist in the management of refugee flows includes the memorandum of cooperation between the Republic of Cyprus and the EU signed this morning in Nicosia on refugees. The memorandum was signed at the Presidential Palace during a meeting between the Vice President of the European Commission Margaritis Schoinas and the President of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis. The agreement envisages actions in areas that include the starting points of migratory flows, the strengthening of reception and management structures of migratory flows in the Republic of Cyprus and the return of illegal immigrants to their countries of origin.

Schinas is on the green line

Margaritis Schoinas visited yesterday points of the Green Line, which are considered by the Cypriot government as gateways for illegal immigrants. The Vice-President of the Commission said that “the perception of the problem from a distance is completely different from what I see here now”. Therefore, Mr. Schoinas said, the Republic of Cyprus should receive assistance for the management of refugee flows, which will include generous Community funding, referring to the conclusion of the strategic agreement signed today at the Presidential Palace. This, said the European official, is a change of page in the management of immigration that will show that Cyprus will not be left alone.
