M. Syregela: We implement policies for equal treatment of the sexes

The elimination of discrimination against women and the promotion of gender equality in all areas of life were the focus of the meetings held yesterday by the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, in charge of Demographic Policy, Family and Gender Equality, Maria Syregela , in Cyprus.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, the Undersecretary met with the Commissioner for Gender Equality of Cyprus, Iosifina Antoniou, and discussed the possibility of cooperation between the two countries on the issue of gender equality, which is still relevant.

As Ms. Syregela stressed, “women even today are fighting for the conquest of simple and fundamental rights, which is why the Greek government is formulating and implementing modern policies to reverse inequalities and ensure equal treatment of the sexes.”

The Undersecretary then met with members of the Council of the National Mechanism for Women’s Rights in Cyprus. During the meeting, ways were discussed to promote the principle of equality and equal opportunities in practice, while great emphasis was placed on the issue of strengthening women’s work. As has been said, high levels of women’s participation in the labor market reduce inequalities, increase freedom of choice and stimulate countries’ economic growth.

Afterwards, Ms. Syregela spoke at an event held at the Presidential Palace, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, which is celebrated every year on March 8.

“A legislative framework that delimits rights and obligations is not enough. The theory of laws is required to become a daily practice,” she said. “The obstacles that women face and to empower them. Only then will women’s lives take a step forward.”
