“For the Greek government, the issue of women’s economic empowerment is a key priority, because without the equal participation of women and men in the labor market, there can be no real growth and real equality. In this context, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs plans and implements actions with the aim of strengthening women’s work, guaranteeing women’s rights, reconciling personal and professional life, as well as increasing their participation in decision-making centers “.
The above was stated by the Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, responsible for Demographic Policy, Family and Gender Equality, Maria Syregela, at a Conference of Ministers of Equality held today, Monday 31 January 2022, the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union, on the economic empowerment of women as a precondition for substantial gender equality.
Ms. Syregela, who represented our country, referred to the policies implemented by Greece and which promote the empowerment of women and help them achieve the position they deserve in the economic, social and political life of the country. The Undersecretary made special reference to the new National Action Plan for Gender Equality 2021-2025 of Greece which includes actions to strengthen the position of women in the labor market. He also spoke about the “Neighborhood Nanny” program and the project to create babysitting facilities in businesses, with the aim of encouraging women to re-enter the labor market after the birth of their children, reduce the burden of childcare and gain financial and professional independence.
Ms. Syregela then referred to the SHARE program, which is being implemented and according to which companies that participate and implement policies of equal treatment and equal opportunities to their executives, will receive an Equal Mark as a reward. Finally, the Undersecretary stood at the 50,000 new jobs created by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs during the pandemic, emphasizing that 57.7% of new hires were for women and added that with the creation of the Innovation Center for women, will increase both the percentage of girls turning to science and STEM studies and the percentage of women turning to research and innovation-based businesses.
“Our country is making tireless efforts to create conditions that favor the equal promotion of women and men at work and to combat stereotypes that have shaped specific roles for women in society,” concluded Ms. Syregela.
It is noted that today’s conference was attended by the Commissioner for Equality of the European Commission, Ms. Helena Dalli and the Director of the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) Ms. Carlien Scheele.
