M. Tsavousoglou: ‘Our army in Cyprus is a deterrent force for external threats’

Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu denied allegations that Turkey could relinquish its guarantee rights to Cyprus, saying the presence of Turkish troops on the island was “the only element” to cover legitimate concerns for the security of the “Turkish Cypriot people”.

According to Sigmalive, the remarkable thing was that Tsavousoglou stressed that the presence of Turkish soldiers in Cyprus “has a deterrent dimension to security threats that may arise outside the island.”

Specifically, answering a relevant question from IYI MP mirzmir Aytun Çıray, Tsavousoglu said that the allegations that Turkey was ready to relinquish the rights of guarantors in Cyprus were also reflected in the Greek Cypriot press in 2020 and that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the reports do not reflect the truth.

Noting that Turkey’s stance on the guarantee system established by the 1959 London and Zurich Accords is clear, Tsavousoglu said: “It is out of the question for Turkey to relinquish its guarantor right in Cyprus. “the only factor in satisfying the legitimate concerns for the security of the Turkish Cypriot people,” he said.

In his response, Tsavousoglu also referred to “security threats that may arise from outside the island” against the pseudo-state, which had not been reported by the Turkish authorities in the past, and said: “Our military presence on the island also works. “Against security threats that may come from outside the island. The survival of the” TRNC “and the security of the Turkish Cypriot people is always our red line.”

Referring to the statement of President Nikos Anastasiadis that “Turkey never wanted the withdrawal of guarantees”, Tsavousoglou said: “The Greek Cypriot leader, in his statements after the publication of the above-mentioned documents in the media, admitted that he was against at the Cyprus Conference. ” he said.

Mr. Tsavousoglou pointed out that “every necessary step for the protection of the legal rights and interests of our country and the” TRNC “in the Eastern Mediterranean has been taken so far and all measures will continue to be taken, both on the ground and in the table”.
