M. Varvitsiotis: Greece is strongly prepared to defend the European borders once again

Greece is “strongly prepared and determined to defend the European borders once again” in the event of a repeat of the events in Evros, said Deputy Foreign Minister Miltiadis Barvitsiotis, attending the General Affairs Council in Brussels. At the same time, he pointed out that “the instrumentalization of refugee and migration flows, as is currently done on the borders of Lithuania and Poland, will not affect other aspects of the European Union, such as the Southeastern Mediterranean.”

In particular, Mr. Varvitsiotis said: “In today’s meeting we will discuss issues related to the rule of law in the Union, we will discuss the preparation of the European Council and of course we will discuss the enlargement of the Union to the Western Balkans.

For us, the vital space of the Western Balkans must definitely find the door to Europe open. This will contribute to stability in our neighborhood but will of course prevent other forces from gaining a strong role and presence in the Western Balkans so important for our security but also for our economic prosperity. It is important for us, and in the context of the preparation of the European Council, to once again raise the living security problems that our country faces from the Turkish provocation and the need for solidarity at all levels.

At the same time, it should be noted that the instrumentalization of refugee and migration flows, as is currently the case on the Lithuanian-Polish border, will not affect other aspects of the European Union, such as the South-Eastern Mediterranean. In the face of any such repetition of events of the past, such as those we experienced in Evros in 2020, they will find Greece strongly prepared and determined to defend once again the European borders. “Our partners need to be aware of this and to have expressed their support in advance.”
