M. Varvitsiotis: Greece seeks extension of loose fiscal policy

Deputy Foreign Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis expressed his condolences for the loss of the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli in an interview with the radio station “Parapolitika”.

Mr. Varvitsiotis described David Sassoli as a passionate European, who had treated Greece with great love, respect and support for the principles of International Law.

Regarding European issues, the Deputy Minister pointed out that Greece is very close to the goals of the French Presidency, as it believes in strategic autonomy and the deepening of the EU, which must have a stronger voice.

On the issue of the new Stability and Growth Pact, he noted that the Greek government is monitoring the proposals that will be submitted, while at the same time seeking to extend the loose fiscal policy, as we go through a period of rising energy prices and supply chain crisis due to pandemic.

Regarding the challenges, Akar stressed that “he has chosen the constant challenge and the constant aggression towards Greece in each of his appearances” and attributed this tactic to his attempt to gain points in the internal audience and to become a central player in the government around by Erdogan.

On the issue of demilitarization of the islands raised by Turkey, he noted that we did not suddenly decide to send an army to our islands, but to face the Turkish threat itself, which the Turks do not say while we emphasize at every opportunity. And this, all the important countries, the permanent members of the UN Security Council, accept it as reasonable and logical and do not give any room to this Turkish rhetoric to gain ground. He reiterated that Greece is ready for any eventuality and any challenge will be answered in the field.

Speaking about the EastMed pipeline, Mr. Varvitsiotis noted that regardless of the course of the project, Greece will not relax its cooperation with Israel, Egypt and Cyprus for the diversification of energy sources and energy efficiency. of Europe, in which the transfer of energy via submarine cables is discussed alongside the pipeline.
