M. Varvitsiotis: The tripartite Greece-Bulgaria-Romania highlights the importance of the Balkans for the EU

“The revival of the tripartite cooperation between Greece, Bulgaria and Romania in the framework of the European Union gives us the opportunity to form common positions on common problems, emphasizing the importance of these for the EU.”

This was stated by Deputy Foreign Minister Miltiadis Barvitsiotis, in joint statements with Bulgarian Deputy Foreign Minister Vasil Georgiev and Romanian Deputy Foreign Minister Daniela Grigore Gitman, following the was made for the first time in many years. Asked about the Turkish provocation at the time when the defense agreement between Greece and the USA is being voted in the Parliament, Mr. Varvitsiotis underlined that this agreement, as well as the defense cooperation agreement with France, strengthen the country’s geopolitical footprint, upgrade its international role and protect our vital interests.

That is why the three countries will come forward with a common position at the next European Council, arguing that each Member State should have the flexibility to choose the right tools and make the appropriate interventions in its own internal energy market, in order to reduce the burden on its citizens, based on its own energy needs and its own energy mix. At the same time, they agreed on the need to diversify EU energy sources through the exploitation of Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean deposits and reaffirmed their commitment to energy cooperation through the interconnection of networks and pipelines. “In fact, we do not want to get into dilemmas. Peace or gas prices. Cheap or green energy. We want to have cheap, green and peacefully obtained energy resources,” said Mr. Varvitsiotis.

Finally, he noted that the three countries express their practical solidarity with Ukraine by sending material for the defense of the Ukrainians against the illegal and unacceptable invasion of President Putin and agreed to join forces to rebuild the country.
