M. Varvitsiotis: Time for decisions to ease energy costs for the citizen

“We are one of the countries that are pushing for proposals to be submitted in order to ease the energy costs for the European citizen”, stressed the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, coming today to the informal EU General Affairs Council in Prague, recalling that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has proposed for months to set a limit on the price of natural gas but also to disconnect the price of electricity from it.

In particular, Mr. Varvitsiotis mentioned that today’s General Affairs Council will be informed about the priorities of the Czech Presidency, while the country’s European perspective will be discussed with the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine Olga Stefanishyna.

At the heart of the discussions, the Deputy Minister emphasized, will be how Europe will deal with the risk of worsening the energy crisis and consequently the economic situation due to the increase in inflation. As he characteristically said, “the situation is no longer favorable to continue discussions, but imperative to make decisions”, stressing that the intention of the Greek government is to support any initiative that will mean a reduction in energy prices for the consumer.

In addition, Mr. Varvitsiotis stated that he will inform his colleagues at the SGY about the Turkish provocation in the region, underlining at the same time the need to make a decision on the exploitation of the fields of the SE Mediterranean.
