M. Varvitsiotis: UNCLOS is the ‘key’ for the security of the Eastern Mediterranean

The humanitarian dimension of the war in Ukraine was at the heart of the discussion that Deputy Foreign Minister Miltiadis Barvitsiotis had with the President of the UN General Assembly, Abdullah Sahid, in New York last night, Wednesday 16 March.

In particular, Mr. Barvitsiotis informed Mr. Sahid about the Greek positions on the war in Ukraine, noting that our country is firmly and non-negotiable in favor of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of independent states and against any use or threat of use of force. in accordance with the provisions of the UN Charter.

He also stressed the need to protect civilians, making special reference to the Greek minority in Mariupol, which has been present in the area for centuries and is now being severely tested.

Finally, the Deputy Foreign Minister raised with the President of the UN General Assembly the issue of respect for international law, with which Greece – firmly and firmly – is identified. As he underlined, part of the international law is the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea UNCLOS, which binds 168 states and its role is particularly important for security in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
