M. Varvitsiotis: We have historical ties of friendship, respect and cooperation with Russia

The two sides stressed the need to further develop economic relations and to strengthen and facilitate tourism flows.

During the meeting, the good atmosphere between the two countries was confirmed, with Mr. Varvitsiotis noting that in a period of increased instability where our region and the whole world are facing serious challenges, cooperation with Russia is becoming more and more important.

“We share strong friendships with Russia. This is the basis on which we must build and strengthen our bilateral relations on issues of mutual interest. For our part and where possible, we are determined to step up efforts in this direction.” reported.

During the meeting with the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, the Greek Deputy Foreign Minister raised the issue of Turkish provocation in the Aegean, the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus, noting Turkey’s destabilizing role in the wider region.

He stressed that Greece is in favor of dialogue and respect for the principles of International Law and the Law of the Sea, which are strongly supported by Russia, values ​​that are practically challenged by Turkey by taking unilateral and provocative actions.

Regarding EU-Russia relations, Mr. Barvitsiotis expressed his concern about the current level of these relations. He pointed out that Greece recognizes the role of Russia in addressing many regional issues, but also global challenges, such as the environment. He also supported the need to maintain the EU dialogue. with Russia.

During the meeting, the Deputy Minister raised again the issue of the repatriation of the Archives of the Israeli Communities of Greece, saying that this will be a symbolic and substantial move in the context of the Greek-Russian Year of History.

Finally, he thanked the Russian side for its valuable contribution to the fires of last August and expressed the desire to further expand cooperation in this critical field for both countries in the future.
