Machinery and equipment industry revenue drops 5.6% in June, says association

The total net sales revenue of the machinery and equipment industry in June retreated 5.6% in relation to May, informs the Brazilian Association of the Machinery and Equipment Industry (Abimaq).

This is equivalent, in terms of value, to an amount of R$ 26.870 billion.

In comparison with June of last year, the drop in the sector’s revenues was 1.8%, according to Abimaq.

Already in the accumulated of the 12 months ended in June, the invoicing registered high of 2.2%. In the range from January to June, however, there was a decrease of 3.7% in relation to the same period of the previous year.

The machinery and equipment industry performance spreadsheet in June also shows a 7.0% drop in the apparent consumption of these assets compared to May.

The changes were also negative compared to the same month and the same semester of 2021 – 6.3% and 7.3%, respectively. In the 12-month period through June, there was a slight increase of 0.1%.

Exports totaled US$ 1.025 billion in June, which represented a decline of 4.9% over the foreign exchange combined with May shipments, according to information supplied by Abimaq.

In comparison with June last year, however, revenue from exports of machinery and equipment grew 20.1%. There was also significant advance in the first half, of 29.2%, and in the 12-month period up to June, of 37.6%.

Imports, in turn, fell by 9.9% in June compared to May, but also grew by 0.9% in relation to the same month of the previous year.

Purchases of machinery and equipment from abroad increased by 10.8% in the period from January to June and grew by 21.8% in the last 12 months.

The machinery and equipment industry ended June with a total of 394,772 workers employed, up 0.6% from May. The advance was even greater in comparison with the same month of the previous year, of 5.8%.

Abimaq also saw an increase of 8.4% in the number of employees in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2021.

In the 12 months ended in June, the number of employees in the sector grew 12.1%.

The Installed Capacity Utilization Level (NUCI) of the Machinery and Equipment Industry rose 2.2 percentage points in June compared to May and reached 79.0%, according to Abimaq.

With the advance, the sector’s average NUCI in the first semester was 78.4%, 1.6 percentage points below the same period of the previous year.

The sector’s backlog, measured in number of weeks to service, increased by 0.2% compared to May and fell by 7.0% compared to June 2021.

Year-to-date through June, there was a decline of 2.2%.
