Machinery industry total sales fall 5.9% in 2022 compared to 2021, says Abimaq

The total net revenue of the Brazilian machinery and equipment industry fell 5.9% in 2022 compared to 2021, informed this Tuesday (31) the Abimaq, an association that represents the sector. The total amount was R$ 310.442 billion. The performance is the result of a 7.0% drop in internal net revenue, which totaled R$ 245.825 billion in the year, partially offset by a 21.0% increase in exports, to US$ 12.185 billion.

In December, total net revenue reached BRL 23.187 billion, a drop of 4.1% compared to November and 9.8% compared to the same month of 2021. Internal net revenue added up to BRL 17.003 billion, 10, 4% lower than the previous month and 7.4 short of December 2021. Exports reached US$ 1.179 billion, up 19.6% compared to November and 1.2% year-on-year.

The Abimaq balance sheet shows that the apparent consumption of machines in Brazil totaled R$ 389.283 billion in 2022, a drop of 6.8% compared to the previous year. In December, apparent consumption reached BRL 29.449 billion, 8.1% below the amount observed in November and 8.3% below the level of the same month in 2021.

Imports of machinery and equipment totaled US$ 24.886 billion in 2022, 13.8% above what was observed in 2021. In December, they reached US$ 2.219 billion, a decrease of 3.1% compared to November, but 11.8% above the amount registered in the same month of the previous year. As imports surpassed exports in the year, the sector’s trade balance showed a deficit of US$ 12.701 billion in 2022.
