MacKenzie Scott, Bezos’ ex-wife, donates BRL 4.2 million to Brazilian NGO

Vetor Brasil, a non-profit, non-partisan organization that seeks to develop professionals in the public sector, received an investment of R$ 4.2 million from billionaire, philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, ex-wife of Jeff Bezos. This is the first time that the activist and third richest woman in the world, according to Forbes, has announced contributions to organizations outside the United States.

In a statement, the company informed that the amount will be invested in technology for the development of new solutions and awareness campaigns on the importance of promoting systemic changes such as the development of public leaderships.

In 2020, MacKenzie decided to accelerate her contributions, supporting people who are suffering the economic effects of the coronavirus crisis and have low access to philanthropic capital (financial donations made by people who do not intend to interfere in the beneficiary organization’s decisions).

“People fighting inequalities deserve center stage in stories about the change they are creating. Placing donors as protagonists in social progress is a distortion of their role. We’re just trying to contribute a fortune that’s been made possible by systems that need change,” says MacKenzie.

“In 2022, we will use technology to fuel our growth. The solutions to Brazil’s great social and economic challenges come through governments. Having well-prepared professionals is essential to solve these challenges. We will be the bridge for these agents of change in society and the State to meet”, comments Joice Toyota, co-founder and co-CEO of Vetor Brasil.

To receive the contribution, Vetor underwent a thorough analysis by Bridgespan, an international consultancy that helped MacKenzie Scott with her donations. “They evaluated our trajectory, strategic planning, finances, projects and the organization’s results”, declared the company.

Vetor Brasil seeks to train professionals and, since 2015, more than 100,000 candidates have been evaluated and about 400 professionals are currently in governments led by 14 different political parties, with 11 people occupying leadership positions in public management. Among the 27 Brazilian states, at least one professional who works in the public sector is trained by the company.

The company also has three pillars of action: training public leaders, changing the culture in people management and diversity & equity in the public sector.

“Our focus for this year is the formation of a new group in the Ubuntu Program, which accelerates black professionals to the public sector”, declared the company.

In addition to launching the Central Vetor platform, a matching tool to attract and select high-performing professionals and the creation of the School Managers certification, “which aims to improve the pedagogical results of public schools throughout Brazil”, reported Vetor Brasil.

“This achievement is very gratifying and important for us, as it is a milestone in our history, which confirms the relevance of our purpose. MacKenzie Scott believed, trusted and gave us complete freedom to use all the money where, how and when we see fit,” says Joice.
