MacOS Big Sur Update May Erase All Data and Damage Your Hard Drive

The MacOS Big Sur operating system was officially released in November 2020. Since then, updates 11.1 and 11.2 have been released, now beta version 11.3 is available to users, but users are already reporting new problems. During the update, the computer may freeze indefinitely, in addition, the recovery interface displays the message “No bootable disk”.

Apple has officially stated that the update requires 35.5 GB of free space, but the system update can still be triggered when there is not enough space on the hard drive. If you do this, you will lose all your data. Moreover, it will damage the hard disk, after which the computer will no longer start.

MacOS Big Sur Update May Erase All Data and Damage Your Hard Drive

This glitch has been observed in macOS Big Sur 11.2 and 11.3 beta releases. If you upgrade your system when there is not enough free space, your computer stops responding, resulting in permanent data loss. After data loss, users will need a second Mac to recover data. If the user enables FileVault file encryption, data recovery is difficult.

The macOS Big Sur installation package is approximately 13 GB in size, but for safety reasons, users need to ensure that 35.5 GB of free disk space remains on disk after downloading the installation package.

Apple has not yet officially responded to this bug.
