Macron and Le Pen face off in debate days before the second round

French President Emmanuel Macron and far-right opponent Marine Le Pen will face each other this Wednesday (20) in a debate that could be decisive in the fierce dispute to decide who will govern France for the next five years.

For Le Pen, behind Macron in opinion polls ahead of the vote next Sunday (24), it is about demonstrating the posture to be president and convincing more voters that they should not fear the extreme right in power.

“Fear is the only argument the current president has for trying to stay in power at all costs,” Le Pen said in a new campaign clip released on Tuesday, accusing Macron of preaching doom on what a far-right presidency would mean for France.

For Macron, possibly the biggest challenge will be not appearing arrogant, something many voters criticize him for, while pointing out the problems he sees in Le Pen’s political plans and building on his five years of experience in power.

“The French now see her as a possible president, unlike in 2017. Now it’s up to us to prove that she will be a bad president,” said a source close to Macron, adding that he “will contest Le Pen’s project. proving it to be inconsistent and unreal.”

The debate, which starts at 9 pm in France (4 pm in Brazil), will be the only one between the two candidates.

When Macron and Le Pen first competed for the presidency in 2017, the debate was catastrophic for Le Pen. She messed up her notes and lost control as the debate allowed Macron to convince voters he was fit to be president. But a lot has changed since then.

For both, convincing left-wing voters will be essential to winning elections.
