Current French President Emmanuel Macron, from the republic on the marchand Marine Le Pen, a far-right candidate for the National Regroupingattended the respective French polling stations this Sunday (10) to cast their votes.
Both appear as favorites to contest the second round of the presidential elections, which would repeat the scenario of 2017, when the centrist was elected for the first time.
Macron’s lead has been slipping in recent weeks and, according to the latest election poll, they have reached a technical tie.
Macron voted for Le Touquet, a commune located in northern France, and was accompanied by First Lady Brigitte Macron. Le Pen deposited the envelope with his vote in Henin-Beaumont, also located in northern France. Supporters of the candidates accompanied them.
This year, they are vying for the presidency of France, in addition to Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen, Jean-Luc Mélenchon; Valéria Pécresse, Éric Zemmour, Yannick Jador; Jean Lassalle; Fabien Roussel; Anne Hidalgo; Nicolas Dupont-aignan; Philippe Poutou and Nathalie Arthaud.
About 48.7 million French people are registered to vote, given that voting is not mandatory in the country. There, voting is done through paper ballots, in a direct and secret way. It is expected that by the end of the night the French will know the result of the investigation.
A victory for the representative of the Republic in March would mean continuity in policies currently in force in France. If Le Pen assumes the presidential seat, important changes in foreign policy, relations with the European Union and policies for immigrants should be felt in the country.
