French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone for 1 hour and 40 minutes on Saturday in a continuation of discussions that began on February 7, according to the Élysée Palace.
“The two presidents discussed different paths to advance the implementation of the Minsk Accords and continued their discussion on security and stability conditions in Europe. Both expressed their willingness to continue the dialogue on these two points”, said the statement from Palácio do Eliseu. “The President of the Republic conveyed to his interlocutor the concerns of his European partners and allies. He told President Putin that sincere dialogue was not compatible with escalation.”
On February 7, the two leaders met for more than five hours. After that meeting, Macron said that he and Putin managed to find “points of convergence” on the crisis and that “it is up to us to agree, together, concrete and specific measures to stabilize the situation and reduce tensions”.
“Several of your proposals and ideas, which it is too early to talk about, I think are quite possible to lay the groundwork for our next steps,” Putin said of the meeting.
