Today, French President Emmanuel Macron hailed the “speed” of decision-making and the “historic unity” shown by Europeans after the invasion of Ukraine.
Welcoming Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on the eve of the EU summit in Versailles, he said that this “war on European soil requires us to do even more and draw conclusions in the short and medium term”.
For Rutte, the “main message” of the summit “must be that of a united EU facing aggression”, “brutal and ruthless” from Russia, but also “the realization that we have turned a page in our history and that “We need to work more closely with NATO and the EU to protect our countries.” The Dutch prime minister hailed Macron’s direct contacts with his Russian counterpart “in an effort to achieve a de-escalation of tensions”.
The Dutch prime minister also said that “it was not possible” for the EU to stop importing gas and oil, as decided by the United States. The “risks” are not “the same” for Europeans as for Americans, who are “not dependent on Russian imports” for their energy supply, French government spokesman Gabriel Atal said.
