Macron defends immigration bill – ‘It’s the shield we’ve been missing’

The French president Emmanuel Macronduring an interview with the France 5 television station, defended the bill on immigration which the French National Assembly and Senate approved, saying that it is the “shield we were missing”. Macron underlined that France is a country that has always welcomed and will continue to welcome foreigners. But he noted that there is an “immigration problem in France”, although the country is not “overwhelmed” by immigrants. “There is more immigration pressure than there was ten years ago in the country. And, yes, it puts a strain on our system,” he said.

“I will submit the bill approved by the Senate and the National Assembly to the Constitutional Council because I believe there are some provisions that are not in accordance with our Constitution,” Emmanuel Macron also said, clarifying at the same time that the text approved in its entirety does not adopt the ideas of Marine Le Pen’s National Rally. There is no “ideological victory” for the far right, the French president said, describing the decision of Le Pen’s party to vote for it “crude maneuver”.

Emmanuel Macron also underlined that there is no split in the presidential camp, after the vote against the bill by some majority MPs and the announcement of the resignation of the Minister of Health, Aurelien Rousseau, whose choice, he said, he respects.
