Leaders of France’s Socialist Party praised the “interesting but inconclusive” talks with President Emmanuel Macron and other heads of traditional parties this Tuesday (10). The French leader said a new prime minister would be announced within 48 hours.
The Socialists emerged as a possible decisive force after Michel Barnier’s government was ousted last week, triggering France’s second major political crisis in six months.
Macron hopes the Socialists will help his next head of government avoid another vote of no confidence, but they want him to name a left-wing prime minister in return. They may also try to water down his historic pension reform.
“It was an interesting but inconclusive meeting,” Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure told reporters after leaving the Élysée Palace. “The ball is in the president’s court.”
Macron told party chiefs he hopes to avoid dissolving parliament again before his second and final term ends in 2027, according to a presidential aide.
Macron’s decision to dissolve parliament in June, triggering early elections, resulted in a disorderly parliament that proved politically unstable.
Macron also told party heads that he does not want to count on the support of the left or the right-wing National Rally (RN) and asked them to agree to a non-aggression pact, according to the aide.
Macron wants to appoint a new government within 48 hours. Next Wednesday (11), the cabinet is expected to approve emergency legislation to extend the 2024 budget, following the failure of the 2025 bill.
