Macron: France does not recognize Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territories

THE Emmanuel Macron stated today that France does not recognize “Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territories” after the controversial statements of his predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy who considers “deceptive” a “return” of Crimea to Ukraine.

“I want to say here one more time in front of you, next to you, in a very clear way: France does not even recognize Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territories nor the results of rigged elections that were staged,” the French president said in a pre-recorded video message broadcast at the Crimean Platform – an annual diplomatic summit initiated by Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelensky to recall its sovereignty Ukraine on the peninsula.

After Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, “we see a continuous deterioration of the humanitarian human rights situation” in the region, he also said.

Nicolas Sarkozy, president of France from 2007-2012, said in mid-August that in Crimea “any return is fraudulent». For Sarkozy, “an uncontested referendum will be necessary to ratify the present state».

In the same way, for the “disputed territories of eastern and southern UkraineSarkozy proposed the organization of “referendums under the strict supervision of the international community for the settlement of territorial issues in a final and transparent manner.”

Sarkozy also advocated a Ukraine that would remain neutral, not joining NATO or the European Union. Against this confrontation, French diplomacy assured that its position has not changed.

In his message, Macron today underlined the “historic decision to recognize in Ukraine the status of a candidate country for EU membership”. “We will remain by your side on this European path and in your expectation for a just and sustainable peace, i.e. in accordance with international law,” he stressed.

“Primarily, we continue to provide you with our assistance in all areas in order for Russia to end its war of aggression against you and allow you to endure, protect and win,” he assured.
