Macron: France ‘will not give in’ to fisheries dispute with London

French President Emmanuel Macron today accused Britain of playing with his country’s nerves in the post-Brexit fisheries dispute, stressing that France “will not give up”.

He reiterated his criticism of Britain over the dispute, which has damaged relations between the two countries, after France said it was still waiting for an additional 150 licenses to be issued to French fishing vessels to fish in British waters.

“We have not gotten what we want. They are playing with our nerves,” Macron told reporters during a visit to Olnoye-Emery in northern France.

“We will not give up,” he stressed.

Tensions have been high between relations between the traditional allies, Paris and London, since Britain voted in favor of leaving the EU in 2016.

At the heart of the controversy is fisheries, an issue that has occupied the Brexit talks for years, not because of its economic importance, but because of its political importance to the leaders of the two countries.

Paris says London should issue more licenses to French fishermen to fish in British territorial waters since Britain left the European Union. Britain says it respects what has been agreed.

Earlier in the day, Shipping Minister Anik Girarden said France would “continue to fight every day to get what is ours and to give these 150 permits”.

Emanuel Macron made the remarks today after conservative Xavier Bertrand, a possible opponent in next year’s presidential election, urged him to do more to defend the interests of French fishermen.

The far-right Marine Le Pen, another possible opponent of Macron, wrote on Twitter: “Faced with the British, Emanuel Macron surrendered before the battle even began.”
