France will respond vigorously to Russia’s act of war against Ukraine, President Macron said on Thursday, adding that Russia could expect tough sanctions that would affect its military, economy and energy sector.
“Last night’s events mark a turning point in European history,” Macron said in a televised address to the French nation, carrying the flags of France, the European Union and Ukraine.
“We will respond to this act of war without weakness, with cold blood, determination and unity,” he added.
The country’s foreign minister, Yves Le Drian, had earlier said France would step up its support for Ukraine “in all its forms”, without elaborating on whether this could mean military means.
The British Prime Minister Boris Jenson, speaking shortly before Macron in a televised speech from Downing Street, had also stated that Britain and its allies will launch a massive package of economic sanctions to hit the Russian economy.
“I do not believe that the Russian dictator will ever subdue the national feeling of the Ukrainians and their passionate belief that their country should be free,” he said.
