Macron: In November, the Baghdad conference on security in the Middle East

The next regional conference in support of Iraq, co-hosted by France, will be held in “late November” in Baghdad, the Emmanuel Macron.

The French president, in his speech before the ambassadors of France gathered at the Champs-Élysées, he also appeared very wary of Syria’s reunification in regional bodies as well as for a possible progress on the issue of the Iranian nuclear program.

“We must continue to engage in the (anti-terrorism) mission in the Levant (Middle East) and strengthen the project that we have been conducting in recent years of political and military stability throughout the region,” he said.

The third edition of the Baghdad Conference – the first was held in the Iraqi capital in August 2021 and the second in Jordan in December 2022 – aims to “consolidate a regional agenda in support of Iraqi sovereignty”, he recalled.

The aim of the conference is to bring together all the neighboring states of Iraq, sometimes very competitive, from Saudi Arabia to Iran which has a strong influence in the region, pro-Iranian militias, from Lebanon to Syria.

“All the countries in the region are located in the process of wanting to resume talks with Syria, re-integrate it into the various forums of negotiation and cooperation”, Macron also underlined.

“Any reintegration in the regional bodies must presuppose increased cooperation in the fight against terrorist groups and organizationsand be accompanied by a political process that allows (Syrian) refugees to return (to their country) with guarantees of protection, recognition, political and economic security,” he stressed.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad participated in the first Arab League summit in more than a decade in Mayreturning to the diplomatic scene of the Arab world from which he had been excluded after the war in Syria. The pan-Arab body had blockaded Damascus in late 2011 for suppressing a popular uprising, which developed into a devastating war, before reinstating it on May 7.

Regarding Iran, Macron “expressed satisfaction with the progress of the last weeks”. “However, perhaps from experience, I shouldn’t get too excited,” he stated.

Tehran has been holding indirect talks with the US to revive the crumbling Iran nuclear deal, and the two countries reached an agreement in August to free five US prisoners in Iran.

“We know that agreements can be fragile, that sometimes those who make them denounce them and that those who sign them do not keep them, which makes us cautious about the nature of the agreements that can be signed in this matter” .
