French President Emmanuel Macron spoke today with Armenian Prime Minister Nicole Pasinian and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in a new mediation effort to normalize relations between the two Caucasus countries.
Today’s video call, which was also attended by the President of the European Council Charles Michel, “is part of the initiative of the President of the Republic, in coordination with the President of the European Council, to encourage dialogue and mutual implementation of humanitarian measures” but also for restoring confidence, the Elysee reported.
Paris has taken this initiative in parallel with President Macron’s efforts to mediate the crisis between Russia and Ukraine. The French president had already met with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan on December 15 in Brussels, on the sidelines of the Eastern Partnership Summit.
Bloody clashes have been reported frequently on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border recently, despite a ceasefire brokered in November 2020 mediated by Russian President Vladimir Putin. An estimated 6,500 people have been killed in the previous six-week war for control of Nagorno-Karabakh.
