Macron is favourite, but Le Pen’s election in the second round is not impossible, says professor

The French population goes to the polls next Sunday (10) to elect the next president of the Republic. Intent polls put current president Emmanuel Macron ahead of Marine Le Pen, although she is on the rise at the moment.

To CNN Rádio, the professor of International Relations at USP, Kai Enno Lehmann, sees the decision in a 2nd round as the “most likely” scenario.

At this point, he still reckons that when the war in Ukraine started and Macron took the lead as a mediator, he rose in public opinion.

“After that, no more, he lost percentage points over the last four weeks.”

The fact that Macron dedicated himself to the war, for Lehmann, made him “enter the campaign very late”: “Le Pen has been campaigning for a long time.”

Kai Enno believes it is “unlikely” that the far-right candidate will win, but “not impossible”.

“The big difference in the second round will be the dispute between two candidates who will invest much more than Macron has been doing in the campaign, he will have to work hard to win over the far left and old traditional voters, if he manages to win them over. them, will win, but it will be tight”, he said.
