French President Emmanuel Macron appeared to warn against issuing any labels to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday (27). “I wouldn’t use terms, because I’m still talking to President Putin,” Macron said during an interview with French channel France 3.
Macron added: “Our aim is to stop the war that Russia has launched in Ukraine, preventing a war and an escalation.”
This comes after US President Joe Biden issued intense criticism of the Russian leader during a meeting with Ukrainian refugees in Warsaw, Poland, on Saturday. Biden called Putin a “butcher”.
After initially downplaying some sort of personal rivalry between him and Putin, Biden has ramped up his rhetoric against the Russian over the past 10 days.
Last week, Biden for the first time called Putin a “war criminal” and later referred to him as a “murderous dictator, a pure thug who is waging an immoral war against the people of Ukraine.” He also called the Russian invasion of Ukraine “inhumane”.
Before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began, Macron emerged as a central figure in Europe’s diplomatic efforts to diffuse the situation between Moscow and the West. The French leader has repeatedly engaged Putin to try to prevent war.
