French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday that France can recognize a Palestinian state in June, adding that, in turn, some countries in the Middle East could recognize the state of Israel.
“We need to move toward recognition (from a Palestinian state). And so we will do in the coming months. I’m not doing this to please anyone. I will do that because, at some point, it will be the right,” he said during an interview on the TV network, France 5.
“And because I also want to participate in a collective dynamic that should also allow those who defend Palestine to recognize Israel in turn, something many of them are not doing.”
Although Palestine has been recognized as a sovereign state by almost 150 countries, most of the great Western powers did not, including the United States, to the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Japan.
Among the countries that do not recognize Israel are Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Yemen.
“Our goal is, at some point in June, with Saudi Arabia, to preside over this conference, where we could finalize the movement towards reciprocal recognition by several countries,” said Macron.
