French President Emmanuel Macron said the country will begin supplying Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets to Ukraine. The speech took place after commemorations of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, one of the most important dates of the Second World War.
The delivery schedule was scheduled to begin after the signing of an agreement with the President of Ukraine this Friday (7) in Paris, as highlighted by Macron in an interview with French broadcaster TF1.
The Mirage 2000-5 fighter is a multirole jet that has been in service for about 25 years, with air-to-air and air-to-ground “capabilities.”
It has been successfully exported by France to several countries and has similar capabilities to the US-made F-16 jet.
Macron stated that he proposed to start training pilots with the aircraft from this summer, with training taking around 6 months. France is already providing basic flight training to Ukrainian pilots as part of the F-16 supply program.
The French leader highlighted that he hopes to build a coalition of countries that can supply Ukraine with its own Mirage jets.
Both Greece and the United Arab Emirates have Mirage 2000-5 jets in their Air Forces.
