The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, said this Saturday (2) that he is against the approval of the free trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur.
“I am against the Mercosur-EU agreement, because I think it is a completely contradictory agreement with what he is doing in Brazil and with what we are doing, because it is an agreement that was negotiated 20 years ago, and that we tried to amend”, he stated at a press conference.
The French president said the agreement does not take into account biodiversity and climate within it. “It’s an old-fashioned trade agreement that dismantles tariffs, if I may. In recent years, these agreements have been greatly improved.”
Macron stated that the agreement is not good for either party.
“We must think about an agreement that is much more geostrategic, much more consistent with our strategies and not mess with an old-fashioned agreement. That’s why I’m not in favor of this deal. Because today I don’t know how to explain this agreement to a farmer, a steel producer, a French or European cement manufacturer,” he said.
