French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday it was important for Britain to find “stability as soon as possible”, commenting on the resignation of British Prime Minister Liz Truss.
“We want, above all, stability,” Macron told reporters as he arrived at the European Union summit in Brussels.
“On a personal level, I am always sad to see a colleague go,” he added.
Liz Truss resigns as UK prime minister
British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation as leader of the Conservative Party on Thursday. The term of Boris Johnson’s successor was marked by the economic crisis faced by the United Kingdom. Truss had the shortest term of office for a prime minister in the country’s history, serving for six weeks.
Last Monday (17), the prime minister apologized for “mistakes” in her program that caused investor confidence to evaporate and her indexes in polls to plummet.
Speaking outside his Downing Street office, Truss accepted that he could not keep the promises he made when he was running for Conservative leadership, having lost faith in his party.
“I recognize that, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate for which I was elected by the Conservative Party. Therefore, I spoke to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party,” he said.
“This morning I met the Chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady. We agree that there will be a leadership election to be completed next week. This will ensure that we stay on track to deliver our fiscal plans and maintain our country’s economic stability and national security.”
In a YouGov poll released on Tuesday (18), Liz Truss received disapproval from 80% of Britons. The prime minister’s approval rating was 10%. The survey was conducted between the 14th and 16th of October.
