French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday he believed there was a chance for peace in Ukraine, even as Russia warned the conflict could intensify.
“There is the prospect of peace, it will come at some point,” Macron told a conference in Rome aimed at looking for ways to promote world peace.
“And at a specific time, given how things are evolving, and when the Ukrainian people and their leaders decide the terms of it, a peace agreement can be built with the other side,” Macron added.
France has repeatedly stressed the importance of keeping Western diplomatic channels open to Moscow since Russian forces invaded Ukraine on February 24.
Russia fired missiles and drones at Mykolaiv, Ukraine, on Sunday, and Moscow said the conflict was on the way to an “uncontrolled escalation”.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu discussed Ukraine’s situation in separate telephone conversations on Sunday with French Armed Forces Minister Sebastien Lecornu as well as US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and defense ministers. from the UK and Turkey.
