More than 900,000 people in France rushed to make an appointment to be vaccinated yesterday, Monday, after the country’s president warned that restrictions could be imposed on citizens if they do not have a health certificate that they have been vaccinated or that they have done a Covid test and it is negative.
Emanuel Macron presented sweeping measures to combat an increase in infections and said vaccination would not be mandatory for the general public at this time, but stressed that restrictions would focus on those who had not been vaccinated.
The president said health workers should be vaccinated by September 15 because otherwise they would face consequences.
Stanislas Niox-Sato, who heads Doctolib, one of the country’s largest websites used to book vaccination appointments, told RMC radio that record numbers of people were asking to be vaccinated after the president’s announcement.
«Within minutes, there were 7.5 million connections to Doctolib. More than 900,000 people made appointments for their vaccination yesterday“twice as much as in the previous record set on May 11,” said Knox-Sato.
Macron said Monday that the health certificate required to attend large-scale events would now be used more widely, including for entry into restaurants, cinemas and theaters.
This certificate will also be needed from the beginning of August to board long-distance trains and planes, which is a further incentive for citizens to be vaccinated as the summer holiday season begins.
A slowdown in vaccination rates and a sudden increase in new infections due to the highly contagious and predominant Delta mutation forced the government to reconsider its strategy.
