The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, will award the Legion of Honor to Chief Raoni Metuktire next Tuesday (26). The honor will be offered during a ceremony in Belém (PA), on the French head of state's first visit to Latin America.
The Legion of Honor was created in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte and is awarded to citizens with military or civil merits.
In addition to Emperor Dom Pedro II, former presidents José Sarney and Fernando Henrique Cardoso are among the Brazilians who have already received the honor. After the tribute, Macron is expected to meet with representatives of indigenous peoples.
The minister of indigenous peoples, Sônia Guajajara, the state secretariat of indigenous peoples of Pará, Puyr Tembé, the president of Funai, Joenia Wapichana, among other leaders from Xingu, Pantanal and the Amazon will be present.
The meeting will end Macron's visit to Belém, where he will visit, alongside President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), the Filha do Combu chocolate factory, on the island of Combu.
