Macron will visit Greenland to enhance European sovereignty

French President Emmanuel Macron will pay an official visit to Greenland on June 15 to express his support for this autonomous Danish territory, claimed by US President Donald Trump, his office said today. Macron will go to Greenland after a “invitation” by Yen Prime Minister Frederick Nielsen and Prime Minister Denmark Methe Fredericksen, with whom he will meet, the French Presidency said. The French president is the first leader of state to visit Greenland after Trump’s threats to attach the US territory. The talks of the three leaders will focus on “Security in the North Atlantic and the Arctic, as well as on issues related to climate change, energy transition and security of supply to critical metals,” the French Presidency noted. The purpose of Macron’s visit is “to enhance cooperation with Greenland in these areas and to contribute to the strengthening of European sovereignty,” he said. […]
