At least three people have been reported killed today by Hurricane Batsirai passing through southeastern Madagascar and causing landslides, leading to the collapse of buildings, power outages and floods.
One of the cities hard hit by the cyclone is the coastal city of Nosi Varika, where most of the buildings were destroyed and floods swept the city from surrounding areas, according to an official.
The cyclone moved inland late last night, hitting the east coast of Madagascar with heavy rainfall and winds blowing at a speed of 165 kilometers per hour. It is estimated that about 150,000 people will be forced to flee their homes.
The devastation from Cyclone Batsirai follows the devastation caused by Cyclone Ana, which struck the island two weeks ago, killing 55 people and forcing 130,000 to flee their homes.
