Portuguese police this afternoon completed searches that began on Tuesday near a dam, at the request of German authorities, as part of their investigation into the case little Madeline McCannwho disappeared 16 years ago.
The judicial police have announced that the material they have collected will be handed over to the German authorities who, as of 2020, believe that the little girl is dead, the victim of a German pedophile who was living in Portugal at the time and has already been convicted of raping an American woman. No further details were given on the data collected.
Earlier, AFP journalists said they saw teams of researchers gathering their tools and setting up the tents they had set up in the previous days near the dam’s bank in the community of Silves, a tourist area in the Algarve.
British police officers also participated in these investigations.
Madeleine McCann disappeared shortly before her 4th birthday on May 3, 2007, from a hotel room in Praia da Luz, where she spent the holidays with her family. Her parents were having dinner with friends at a nearby restaurant at the time. Her disappearance led to an international campaign to locate her and remains one of the biggest police mysteries of recent years.
The area where the Arante Dam is located, about 50 kilometers from where Madeleine disappeared, was also thoroughly searched in 2008. Divers had dived into the waters then but found only animal remains.
According to local media, the German suspect, Christian Brickner, went there regularly and called the place his “little paradise”. The same sources said police were searching the area for a pink blanket or the pajamas the little girl was wearing the night she disappeared. Portuguese magazine Expresso wrote that the testimony of an informant, deemed “very credible” by German authorities, led police to search the area again.
