Madeleine McCann’s younger sister speaks after 16 years of her disappearance: ‘It’s a sad occasion’

Her younger sister Madeline McCannAmelie McCann, spoke publicly for the first time last night as her family celebrated the harrowing 16th anniversary of the little girl’s disappearance. Mandy disappeared from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal in May 2007 when she was just three years old.

THE 18-year-old Amelie McCann attended last night with her parents and relatives a candlelit ceremony dedicated to Madeleine. Amelie said:It’s nice that everyone is here together, but it’s a sad occasion». It’s the first time Amelie has been seen since she was a toddler, giving a glimpse of what her older sister might look like as an adult.

Among the crowd was Madeleine McCann’s mother’s close friend, the Fiona Payne, who was on the fatal holiday in Portugal when Mandy disappeared. Maddy’s parents were having lunch with friends when Maddy was abducted from their apartment a few meters away.

Amelie lit a candle for Maddy and other missing children, at a spot where photos of her sister adorned a black railing and where a beacon of hope still shining round the clock for her. Madeline’s parents hope Maddy, who would now be 19, may still be alive.

The vigil was held two weeks after a German court decided not to hear a sex crime case against a man suspected in Madeleine’s disappearance. Her twin brother Sean did not attend.

Investigations are ongoing

THE German police she is convinced that maddy is dead and intends to charge the prime suspect, Christian Brueckner, who was named nearly three years ago, for her kidnapping and murder, in which no body was ever found. But it has recently emerged that the convicted pedophile may never stand trial in the case, due to a legal detail regarding the jurisdiction of foreign courts. Brueckner, 45, is serving a sentence in a German prison for the rape of an American tourist at the same Portuguese resort where Maddie disappeared from in May 2007.

THE British police asked the interior ministry recently more money to continue her research, which is codenamed Operation Grange and has cost the taxpayer £13m so far. Their request is to be approved by the special grants committee.
