“Like A Prayer” is the music of Madonna best placed in the ranking of the 500 Greatest Songs in History, made by Rolling Stone magazine. The song is the first single, title and main song from the American singer's fourth album.
It is the album that accentuates the controversial content adopted by Madonna in relation to themes focused on Catholicism, which had already been presented on previous albums, such as “Like A Virgin” and “True Blue”.
The album is darker and addresses difficult aspects of Madonna's life, such as her breakup with Sean Penn and the death of her mother, which ended up influencing the sound aesthetic, which features production from Patrick Leonard and Prince.
In “Like A Prayer”, Madonna composed using religious terms in double meaning and brought lyrics that established metaphors between religious education and sex. God is the only possible man in the world and this juxtaposition is also evident in the musical production, which mixes elements of funk with gospel. The point of the song has a choir singing a reference to orgasm.
The clip is directed by Mary Lambert, Madonna's frequent partner at this stage, and has images of the singer kissing a black saint and burning crosses. Because of the clip, a commercial that the singer would make for Pepsi was censored and Pope John Paul II even asked that Madonna be banned from appearing in Italy.
“Like A Prayer” is present in the setlist of “The Celebration Tour”, which will end at the show that Madonna will perform in Rio de Janeiro, on Saturday (4). The presentation will feature hits that span the queen of pop's entire career.
