Madrid theater cancels Bolshoi performance after Ukraine invasion

O Royal Theater of Madrid said this Friday (4) that he canceled performances of the prestigious russian bolshoi ballet scheduled for May because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and for the “painful humanitarian emergency” it caused.

Thousands of people have been killed or injured and more than 1 million refugees have fled Ukraine since February 24, when Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the biggest attack on a European state since World War II.

“The Royal Theater regrets not being able to count on this prestigious company, whose director, Vladimir Urin, spoke publicly in favor of Ukraine and against the war”, he said.

The venue had already shown its support for Ukraine on February 27, when, at a performance of “Twilight of the Gods”, Siegfried’s corpse was draped in a Ukrainian flag.

The invasion prompted dozens of private companies and various institutions to either stop operating in Russia or cut ties with Russian correspondents.

The Madrid theater said it would refund tickets that had already been sold.
