Maduro announces “mega-election” for 2025 and highlights obstacles for candidates

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro announced that in 2025 he intends to hold elections to elect deputies to the National Assembly (AN), governors, legislators and councilors.

“In 2025, what is coming is the mother of elections, a mega-election because the National Assembly has to elect deputies, it is necessary to elect the 23 governors per state and also the 335 local authorities, the 23 legislative councils and the 335 municipal councils,” announced Maduro.

Amid the growing crisis in Venezuela due to the controversy of the National Electoral Council (CNE) declaring Nicolás Maduro as the winner without presenting the necessary validation evidence, and the subsequent ratification by the Superior Court of Justice, Maduro participated on Monday (26) in the XI Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of ALBA-TCP, where he received the support of the member states.

During one of his speeches, the President of Venezuela assured that preparations for the next elections have already begun and warned that “those who do not recognize electoral power” will not be able to participate in 2025.

“To one who understands, clear words,” the president added. Maduro said he agreed with National Assembly leader Jorge Rodríguez, who proposed last week that a new law on political parties be considered that would ban anyone considered “fascist” from running for office.

Last week, Rodríguez defined as “fascists” those who call for coups d’état, foreign invasions or assassinations of public figures. “At least in Venezuela, a fascist cannot be a candidate,” he stressed during the parliamentary session.

“Those who do not recognize the electoral power, those who do not recognize the judicial power, those who do not recognize the powers of the State, those who do not respect the right to peace, those who ultimately do not recognize the power of this Constitution, simply by law cannot participate in the next electoral processes. Not in 2025, not in any electoral process, it is that simple,” Maduro highlighted.
