Maduro asks Mexico's new president to create “an alternative to the right”

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, asked the winning candidate of the Mexican presidential elections, Claudia Sheinbaum, to strengthen the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) to create “an alternative to the right and neoliberalism” on the continent.

Celac is a regional coordination mechanism created in 2011 and made up of 32 countries.

Maduro's appeal came a day after official preliminary results showed that Sheinbaum won Sunday's elections (2).

During his weekly television program, Maduro projected the message on X —formerly Twitter— with which he congratulated Sheinbaum on his victory, as well as the thanks she addressed to him.

Furthermore, Maduro said that the electoral result in Mexico is a triumph over “the right”. He added that he looks forward to working with Sheinbaum as he has been able to do with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who ends his term on September 30.

“I am sure that we will continue to advance as we did with President López Obrador, on the path of strengthening Celac, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States; on the path to building a powerful social, political and economic bloc in Latin America and the Caribbean; on the path of the union of greater Mexico and Bolivarian Venezuela and on the path of building our continent as an alternative to the right and neoliberalism”, he noted.

A CNN has reached out to Sheinbaum's team for comment and is awaiting a response.

In Mexico, as soon as the results are confirmed and validated by the Electoral Court, Sheinbaum will be formally declared president-elect and will take office on October 1st.

In Venezuela, Maduro is preparing for the presidential elections on July 28, in which he will seek a second re-election and a third term. On the opposition side, the candidate of the majority bloc will be former ambassador Edmundo González Urrutia.
