Former Venezuelan presidential candidate Edmundo González issued a statement on Monday (9) in which he explained that he made the decision to leave his country to receive political asylum in Spain because he thought of his family and all Venezuelan families in “this moment of so much tension and anguish”.
“This decision was made with Venezuela in mind and that our destiny as a country cannot, and should not, be one of a conflict of pain and suffering,” said González.
The opposition candidate thanked the Spanish government for granting him protection, and reiterated that his decision “is a gesture that extends a hand to everyone and I hope that as such it will be reciprocated.” He also said that resentment is incompatible and reinforced that dialogue is necessary for politics.
González’s departure from Venezuela comes five days after a court ordered his arrest on charges related to publishing election results on a website. González has repeatedly denied the charges against him.
Moments before González’s defense confirmed that he had left Venezuela, the country’s executive vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, published a message on Instagram in which she said that the Government had granted him safe passage to leave the territory “in favor of tranquility and political peace in the country.”
